Frequently Asked Questions
WILL MY CAPSULES CURE POSTPARTUM MOOD DISORDERS?
No. While these supplements have many benefits and have been said to prevent onset of postpartum mood disorders, they are not treatment for clinical postpartum mood disorders. If you feel you may be at risk, or think you are developing a postpartum mood disorder, click here for more resources.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW AND TRADITIONAL ENCAPSULATION?
When you choose raw encapsulation your placenta is rinsed and immediately dehydrated.
When you choose traditional encapsulation we rinse and then steam your placenta before dehydrating it. Raw method is believed to keep more of the beneficial hormones, enzymes, and nutrients intact.
Steamed encapsulation is best for women a with GBS+ diagnoses or for women worried about other pathogens. Some placenta specialists will add herbs to their capsules known to help with postpartum ailments. TMB does not prepare placentas this way to avoid any possible unknown allergies or in tolerances. We take pride in preparing placentas in a way that doesn't interfere with their innate healing qualities.
I READ SOMEWHERE THAT PLACENTA CAPSULES WILL DECREASE MY MILK SUPPLY, IS THIS TRUE?
As with any supplement, proper dosing is very important. As an encapsulation professional, I cannot stress that enough. If you’re taking a dose above or below what your body needs, you could experience fluctuations in your milk supply. Many women experience an increase in supply from their placenta capsules, but once in a while women will report the opposite.
If you are experiencing this, please reach out to us here and we can help you figure out the right dose for you.
CAN MY BABY BECOME SICK IF I TAKE PLACENTA CAPSULES?
When properly prepared, absolutely not.
After a single case of a baby developing an GBS infection with a mother who had taken placenta capsules prior to the diagnoses, the CDC made a statement against encapsulation.
Since then multiple studies have surfaced proving that properly prepared capsules pose absolutely no risk to mothers or their newborns. Our placenta specialist at Ten Moons Birth is both blood borne pathogen trained, and food safety trained. She understands the necessary precautions to keep you and your family safe.
WHAT DO PLACENTA PILLS TASTE LIKE?
If you keep the contents inside the capsule, then they taste like nothing! I have a had a client or two in the past let me know that she tried the ground placenta out of it’s capsule and that it’s tasted like dried fish. I recommend just taking the capsule.
I'M A RAW VEGAN, IS ENCAPSULATION CONSIDERED RAW?
For something to be considered raw it must be dehydrated at a temperature no higher than 109 degrees. I dehydrate my clients’ placentas at 140 degree Fahrenheit, that’s the absolute minimum to meet food safety guidelines.
My recommendation for people living a raw lifestyle is to cut the placenta into little 1 inch by 1 inch squares after rinsing with water and apple cider vinegar. Put those pieces on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, and keep those in the freezer. Make yourself a big smoothie in the morning with 3 of those pieces and drink it throughout the day.
Be sure not to drink it all at once though, it can cause feelings of anxiety and restlessness in large amounts!
